Site Search
Each Month I try to select a site where the content is not just of interest to me, but will appeal to a wide range of visitors to the site.
In theory there should only be one site of the month, but sometimes several sites attract my interest, often because of historical anniversaries, or a specific event. In such cases rather than attempt to decide which to chose I list both.
Very occasionally (I wish it happened more often), friends suggest sites which they feel are suitable candidates for Site of the Month. Whilst these are not always used immediately, they are bookmarked for future use and eventually are used.
As a guideline (not a rule), once a Site has appeared as a Site of the Month, it is normally not repeated. Exceptions tend to be charities, or where a site has been so extensively overhauled that it is 'completely fresh'.
The main problem with the Archive of Sites of the Month, is that the Web is a transient medium. An excellent site, may become outdated, declined into a Ghost site where the owner has effectively closed the site, but left a closure notice page, or the owner has sold the domain and the site has changed character completely, or the site just disappears from the web.
Therefore occasionally, I carry out an audit of the Archive and if a site is either no longer suitable, or just not available, I find a near alternative, or if the site was exceptional, for one reason, or another and has been archived by Wayback Machine, or similar Internet archive, then I change the URL to point to the Archive.
