Sites of the Month for 2011: July to December

Site of the Month July 2011

This month, I have chosen a site which provides coverage of the Science of Archaeology:

Past Horizons

This site is not just designed to stimulate an interest in Archaeology and Conservation, but to encourage people to become actively involved. Coverage includes the latest volunteer projects, videos articles and current news. So I am hoping by making this site of the Month some of you may progress from watching Time Team on Ch4 to digging out that Trowel (or even buying one) and getting involved.

Sites of the Month for August 2011

August has man anniversaries of conflicts starting, or ending through the Warsaw Uprising, the Japanese Surrender at the end of World War II, or the invasion of Kuwait, which began, what is now known as the first Gulf War.

But summer is here and instead of dwelling on War, this month I have chosen to cover, with two sites a British Isles Crown Dependency that is ideal for a break of 4, or 5 days:

Site of the Month for September 2011

This 9th September marks the 10th Anniversary of the devastating attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York, the attack on the Pentagon and the tragedy of United Airlines Flight 93, where passengers attempted to defeat the hijackers and although preventing them from attacking their target, were all killed when the Aircraft crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

So to mark the event that shocked the civilised world and changed the way the People of the United Sates view Terrorism, I have chosen:

Also see: The Picture of the Month: Tribute in Light - The World Trade Centre Memorial 2004 . More information on this atrocity can be found on: The September 11 Digital Archive , which was the Site of the Month chosen to mark the 5th Anniversary in September 2006 and on the Wikipedia September 11 Attacks page.

Site of the Month for October 2011

The 28th October 2011 marks the 40th Anniversary of launch of the Prospero Satellite by a Black Arrow Launch Vehicle from the Woomera Test Range in South Australia.

Whilst the Anniversary of the launch of the only British Satellite launched by a British Carrier Rocket has been covered by the British Media, and on this site a photograph of the Science Museum's Prospero Mockup is Picture of the Month . I have chosen a site which covers the history of the Woomera Test Range, which began as the Anglo-Australian Long Range Weapons Establishment Joint Project for testing Missiles, Sounding Rockets and Space Launchers.

Although Woomera has declined since its 20 year heyday from 1949 to 1969, it is still active and may once again rise is and internationally important Defence, Research and Launch Range asset.

Site of the Month for November 2011

I have selected two sites this month. The first, focuses on the British National Service era, when young men we called up to serve with one of the Armed Services,

Originally this site was mainly concerned with the Rifle Regiments of the British Army as the webmasters had served in the Rifles. As the site has evolved the focus has changed to National Service, but there are specific sections on the Rifles and Light Infantry,

November is the month of remembrance for the fallen in Britain;s Wars, both large and small.
It is becoming a tradition for this site to mark this month with a link to the annual:

Whilst November is the Nations month of formal remembrance and during June we honour our services personnel on Armed Services Day, British Servicemen and increasingly Women put their lives on the line every day of the Year. Not for short term political objectives, with which we may, may not agree, but in the service of Queen and Country.

Therefore the work, of the Charities which support those currently servicing, ex servicemen and women and their families, also need to be helped with donations through out the year. The Selected Armed Services Charities Section of this site lists some of the other Charities that support, or assist our Servicemen & Women, and their families.

Site of the Month for December 2011

Christmas is not only a celebration of Christ's Birth, but also a Celebration of Family and Friends, the giving and receiving of Presents and a general atmosphere of goodwill.

Sadly in today's Britain, there are far too many who are homeless, a few, admittedly by choice, but most due circumstances, bad judgement, or just bad luck, are either existing on the streets, or trying to reestablish their lives in homeless shelters, or sheltered housing.

So I have chosen as my first site of the month, one of the UK wide charities that not only provides Shelters for the Homeless, but assists them to rebuild their lives:

Shelter - The Housing and Homeless Charity
Site of the Month is To Be Advised

Whilst we enjoy the convivial company of friends and family during the festive season, many British Servicemen and women are serving far away from their homes and family this Christmas. So my second site of the month is:

Support Our Soldiers

Finally for Children of all ages, a reminder that: NORAD Tracks Santa as Christmas approaches each year.
